Perhaps you’ve seen this Chamber member running the trails of Lakeville lately and wondered why… Well, he’s been training for the Fargo Half Marathon held this past Saturday. He finished in 2:03. Steve’s only been running competitive for the past 3 years – spanning 11 races of various lengths.
Have you always been a runner?
Heck no. Never participated in high school track despite having a shirt that I designed stating “Property of Wadena Track, 1982”. I designed the shirt as a lark – for fellow Fargo Marathon runners from Wadena like Brady Folkested of Lakeview Bank.
What’s the reason for picking up this sport mid-life?
Now that I’m a man of a certain age, thoughts of my own mortality start to sink in. You see, my father passed away at the age of 51. Hey, I figure, I’m living on borrowed time – so I should somewhat keep in shape. Actually, my natural free-time mid-set would be to sit around watching sports on TV and drinking beer. (I still do that, but the running allows for less guilt and self-loathing)
What’s up next for Steve?
To relax a bit now – cutting back from 28+ miles per week – to training less distances. I plan to run the Pan-O-Prog 4 mile with my daughter Ali, enter a couple of 5 and 10Ks and the Twin City 10 Mile race in the fall. The handful of races I’ve experienced with my daughter – like last weeks Race For The Cure are the most fun.
What’s a fun fact about you?
My nicest shoes are running shoes… 6 pair. After about 300 miles they turn into lawn mowing shoes.
If you see Steve running the Lakeville sidewalks and trails, give him a honk. He likes that.
Could Steve Volavka be Lakeville’s 2nd Stick Man?!
