CONSTRUCTION is seeing unprecedented demand in laborers. MN Department Economic & Employment Development projections show construction employment in the state growing by 39 percent between 2010 and 2020, the fastest growth of any major industrial sector. While some of these occupations, such as construction managers, electricians and plumbers, might require some post-secondary education, most simply require on-the-job training and experience. With construction occupations offering substantially higher wages than the average of all occupations, along with the industry’s comeback since 2010, the future looks bright for construction.

HEALTHCARE continues to grow. Local industry movement towards increased ambulatory care provides employment opportunities at facilities outside of a hospital. Talent shortages continue due to high demand, training capacity and/or lack of job seeker education and experience. In addition to the technical training needed to secure employment in this industry, soft/life skills are also critical for success.

HOSPITALITY continues to show growth and has tremendous opportunity to strengthen the local economy through exceptional customer service skills. According to jobs.net the hospitality industry is growing at a faster rate than other fields. Since the hospitality industry encompasses a wide range of businesses, from hotels to restaurants, travel agencies, convention centers and more, it is not difficult to get your foot in the door with an entry-level position.

MANUFACTURING remains a competitive industry and continues as a great occupation. Updated technical and soft skills are necessary for successful employment. Lakeville’s manufacturing sector has stabilized to pre-recession levels. Increased wages for entry level positions are occurring with many manufacturers due to skill shortages and demand. Multiple manufacturers are currently involved in or projecting facility remodels and/or expansions due to their growth and limited manufacturing facility inventory. Many of these manufacturing expansions also include forecasted employment growth.

TRANSPORTATION and material moving occupations group is projected to grow 5 percent from 2014 to 2024, adding 466,800 new jobs. An increased demand for moving people around and shipping raw materials and finished products over highways, rail lines, and waterways should contribute to employment growth. The need for maintenance technicians will also increase with the increased number of transportation vehicles.
